But even that doesn’t count as a direct quote because Jesus is speaking in metaphor. He’s not saying that he is God. So, where did this idea come from?

It comes from a misreading of Matthew 3:17. In that verse, Matthew quotes John the Baptist as saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” But Matthew doesn’t mention Jesus as saying anything.
